Daniel Obi Awduche, MBA, Ph.D.

Daniel Awduche has worked in various technical leadership and management positions over the past decade. Presently, he is employed by Verizon Business.

Employment

Dr. Awduche is a Fellow/PMTS in the Network Technology Organization at Verizon where he provides architecture and design oversight for Verizon's global public and private IP networks. Prior to his current appointment, he led the Internet Network Engineering organization for Verizon Business (a subsidiary of Verizon), responsible for network engineering of Verizon's public IP network, which is one of the largest IP networks in the world (previously known as UUNET). Prior to the acquisition of MCI by Verizon, Dr. Awduche managed the Internet Engineering organization for MCI.

His previous appointments have included Chief Scientist at Marconi Broadband Routing and Switching, Vice President of Architecture and Educational Services at Movaz Networks, and 'Distinguished Technical Member' and acting Director of Global Network Architecture at UUNET. During his employment at UUNET, Daniel led a team of engineers engaged in architecture, design, and development activities aimed at UUNET's global IP network. He played a significant role in the architecture, design, and implementation of UUNET's backbone network, which was the largest Internet backbone in the world in the 1990's, conveying a substantial proportion of global Internet traffic.
Among his many accomplishments at UUNET, Dr. Awduche orchestrated the first large scale deployment of MPLS technology in the world; driving the project from concept to operational manifestation in the UUNET global IP network.

At a technical level, Dr. Awduche is a recognized authority on Internet traffic engineering, Internet network architecture, control plane software engineering for routers and optical switches, and advanced network protocol specification and synthesis.

At a business level, Dr. Awduche has established a stellar track record for successfully supervising the architecture, design, and implementation of very large telecommunications projects; and is respected for his intimate understanding of the economics of the global Internet economy.

Industry Leadership

Dr. Awduche has a substantial record of service to the engineering profession, as evidenced by his contributions to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, (IEEE)., and the operational evolution of the Internet backbone infrastructure.

In December 2005, EETimes listed Dr. Awduche as one of 29 innovators that have had a significant impact on a broad range of industry sectors.

IETF Contributions

Dr. Awduche has been involved in the development of Internet standards through his participation in the IETF. Within the IETF, he has served as Co-Chair of the IP-Over-Optical (IPO) Working Group. He helped to establish the IETF Internet Traffic Engineering Working Group and served as its initial Chairman. In addition, he has made fundamental contributions towards the advancement of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Generalized MPLS (GMPLS), Internet Traffic Engineering, and IP-Over-Optical control technologies.

He is especially notable for championing the development and standardization of MPLS traffic engineering technology.

The origins of Generalized MPLS (GMPLS) can be traced back to his pioneering work on MPLS traffic engineering and Multiprotocol Lambda Switching (MPLambdaS).

He has also been very prominent in articulating some of the modern concepts of Internet traffic engineering.

IEEE Contributions

He was the Guest Editor of the October 2007 and December 2006 Special Issues of the IEEE Communications Magazine (Feature Topic on "Advances in Control and Management of Connection-Oriented Networks").

He has served as Guest Editor of the Proceedings of the IEEE, (along with Professor Bijan Jabbari, Yakov Rekhter, and Professor Jean Walrand): September 2002 Special Issue on "Internet Technology and the Convergence of Communications Services."

He was a Guest Editor of the October 2004 Special Issue of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC). The topic of the Special Issue was "Advances in Metropolitan Optical Networks."

He was the Conference Co-Chair for the 2006 IEEE Symposium on Control and Management of High Performance Networks (part of Globecom-2006).

He initiated and organized the first International Workshop on MPLS (IW-MPLS'98), which focused exclusively on the emerging technology of Multiprotocol Label Switching. The workshop took place on November 12-13, 1998, in Fairfax, Virginia.

He was the Technical Program Chair for the Second International Conference on MPLS, which took place on October 24-26, 1999, in McLean, Virginia.

He is the Technical Program Chair for the 2008 International Conference on MPLS.

He was the Technical Program Chair for the Third International Conference on MPLS, which took place on October 22-24, 2000, at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia.

He was the Technical Program Chair for the MPLS 2004 International Conference, which took place on October 17-19, 2000, in Washington, DC.

He was the Co-Chair for the Conference on "Advanced Internet Protocols," which took place on Feb 23-24, 1999, in San Diego, California.

He was the Technical Program Co-Chair for the 2001 IEEE Workshop on High Performance Switching and Routing which took place on May 29-31, 2001, in Dallas, Texas.

He has been an invited speaker at numerous leading industry conferences.

Education

Dr. Awduche's academic background includes the M.S. degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; the MBA degree (concentration in Finance and Entrepreneurship) from George Mason University; and the Ph.D. degree in Information Technology from George Mason University.

He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a member of the ACM.
